Singapore, 27 March, 2014 – Wego the leading travel metasearch site in the Asia Pacific and Middle East, along with big data and travel review partners, TrustYou, today revealed that Melbourne and Sydney are not that far apart when it comes to hotel satisfaction.
An average of 50,000 travellers who rated hotel satisfaction in both cities, from beds, to clean bathrooms and location, scored Melbourne overall at 87.78, and Sydney 87.56.
“Melbourne just edged out over Sydney overall, but when examining the scores a bit closer, Melbourne performed higher in 10 of the 15 TrustYou review categories,” said Joachim Holte, Wego’s Chief Marketing Officer.
“Most of the scores had a disparity of only a couple of percentage points however when it comes to the Minibar, 20 per cent of guests were more impressed by those in Melbourne,” he added. “Not sure if that means that more people use the Minibar in Melbourne or whether they’re just better stocked!”
Sydney outranked Melbourne for internet, location, nightlife, room satisfaction and perhaps understandably, for views. However Melbourne took first place for service and price, even reception and clean bathrooms were a hit with guests. Beds, breakfast and food in general scored just a couple of points above their counterparts in Sydney.
“The traditional competition between these two fantastic Australian cities will continue to spark comparisons for some time to come,” continued Holte. “It’s wonderful to see overall however the ratings for hotels in both cities are of a generally high standard. Internet and WiFi continue to be a thorn in the side of the hotel industry, not just in Australia but in many destinations. As travellers, we expect quality internet that is readily available so we can remain easily connected wherever we go. I think this is improving, albeit perhaps a little slower that we’d like.”
“Most importantly, service and beds rank high in the approval ratings and with food and breakfast rated in the mid-seventies, I think both cities should feel fairly proud of themselves,” Holte concluded.
