Have football, will travel!

Dubai, 28 October, 2015Wego.ae, the leading travel search site in the Middle East and Asia Pacific, today shares insights into just how passionate GCC residents are about football.

“It’s quite clear from analysing flight and hotel search data, that there are definite destination trends that coincide with major football matches,” said Mamoun Hmedan, Managing Director Wego MENA & India.

“This is a region extremely committed to football and the spikes in travel planning surrounding some of this year’s biggest games is evident,” Hmedan added.

Flight searches from the GCC to Barcelona spiked almost tenfold in late March coinciding with the Clásico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. The UEFA Champions League semi-finals in late April and early May, saw flight searches to Madrid triple, and quadruple for the second semi-final in Munich.

“Berlin hosted the final of the UEFA Champions League in early May and flight searches on Wego for the German city increased by around 90 percent,” said Hmedan. “Hotel stays were predominantly (41 percent) for a two night stay, indicating that visits were for the specific purpose of attending the game.”

“While the final matches are the star attraction, we also saw some regularity in flight searches to Manchester, where data tripled for the UK city, coinciding with weekend games.”

“Sport and travel are undeniably intertwined in this region and the popularity of sport tourism is growing,” Hmedan continued. “Flight duration and connectivity from the UAE is convenient and manageable to almost all of the host match cities, so we can expect this region to be watching a great deal more games in person, rather than on the television.”

Hmedan says that the travel industry itself is further proof of the region’s passionate connection. In fact, the Gulf airlines account for just over a half of global airline sponsorship spend, according to Simon Rines, managing editor at UK-based sports business analyst, IMBR publications*.

“Etihad Airways has been the major partner of Manchester City Football Club since 2009, investing in a named stadium which is the centrepiece of the Etihad Campus – a large Sportcity site in East Manchester,” he explained. “The carrier also sponsors Etihad Stadium in Melbourne and the Melbourne City Football Club, airline partner of the Al Ain Football Club (UAE Pro-League leaders), and became principal partners of New York City FC last year.”

“Emirates is the biggest sponsorship spender among global airlines, with partnerships with AC Milan, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-German and Arsenal. The carrier also has a strong presence in Asia partnering with the Asian Football Confederation.”

“The sponsorships not only reflect the passion for football in the region, but also the investment by airlines globally to draw more visitors to the Gulf through the incredible branding reach of the game.”

And more sport related spikes in travel search are expected.

“It’s likely that travelling sports fans will seek travel options to Madrid during November for the upcoming Classico game, and further matches in the Champions League or Copa del Rey,” Hmedan concluded. “We expect that flights and hotel searches will rise again for Milan, Italy, for the much anticipated Champions League final taking place on May 28 next year.”
